Prepare for surgery
If you are going to undergo surgery, please keep the following in mind:
You may not eat or drink anything after midnight just prior to the day of surgery. You may take any necessary medications with a sip of water. If you have any questions concerning which of your medications you should take on the morning of surgery, ask your physician.
For most operations, it is necessary to stop aspirin and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Motrin, Advil, Alleve) 10 days prior to the date of your operation. If you are on coumadin (warfarin), special arrangements will need to be made regarding the stop and restart dates of this medication. This may need to be coordinated with your primary care physician. We recommend refraining from the following medications as well, as they may impair normal blood clotting: vitamin E, glucosamine, chondroitin.
Please bring a list of your medications on the day of your operation. Make sure to include the doses and the number of times per day that you take the medication.
Let your physician know if you develop any new symptoms or illnesses prior to your operation. If you develop an infectious illness or fever, it is usually preferable to delay the operation until the illness resolves.
